The Costa Calida starts at the northern end of the Mar Menor which is a large salt water lake seperated from the Mediterranean by a thin strip of land. Much of the area is a nature reserve and houses many different kinds of water fowl, including pink flamingos.
One of the largest resorts in the area is La Manga which houses a five star golf resort. There are numerous developments and further planning for more golf courses in the area. The area benefits from similar weather to its neighbouring Costa Blanca South and averages about twenty days per year rainfall.

The coastline and interior are unspoilt and are far less developed than in the neighbouring Costa Blanca.
